BLACK STARS
100th THEATRE PRODUCTION BY TEATRO DA GARAGEM
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY Carlos J. Pessoa

14 TO 24  nov 2019
[THU TO SAT 9:00 PM , SUN 5:00 PM]
Teatro Taborda

SYNOPSIS

BLACK STARS is a show made from stories of women who decide to rebuild themselves as people. This reconstruction is never easy for anyone, and is unlikely to have an end. Every day, perhaps, we have to learn to live. BLACK STARS is a show about this self-questioning; it is both fun and sad; it invites us into the darkness of ourselves with lighted lamps. After all, we are alive and we can be happy without finished formulas.

BLACK STARS premiered in February 2018 at the Spazio Teatro No’hma (in Milan, Italy) and in November 2018 received the Honorable Mention at the Il Teatro Nudo di Teresa Pomodoro International Award. A renowned jury in the international contemporary theatrical scene, including Peter Stein, Eugenio Barba, Luis Pasqual, Tadashi Suzuki, Lev Dodin, Stathis Livatinos, Ludovic Lagarde, Ruth Heynen, Enzo Moscato and Oskaras Korsunovas, gave this Mention.

GARAGEM 30 ANOS: IMPRESSÕES DIGITAIS
EXPOSIÇÃO DO TEATRO DA GARAGEM
30 JANEIRO A 26 JULHO 2020
TEATRO TABORDA

SYNOPSIS

THE THEATRE OF A READ MAN is a project that meets with the work of E. de Melo e Castro, built with poetic coordinates – between Lisbon and São Paulo, between theatre, performance and poetry. Three Portuguese actors and three Brazilian actors create a pendulum where words gain uncertain concepts, oscillating between various temporalities and spatialities.

 E. M. de Melo e Castro is a poet, essayist and engineer, born in Covilhã (Portugal), pioneer of experimental poetry, interventions and performances that marked the 60s/70s, in the period of the Portuguese Fascist Dictatorship, and who lives in São Paulo for about 20 years.

Melo and Castro’s poetic work, biography, and testimonies touch, encourage, and motivate a resistance intervention. Resistance to intolerance, resistance to technological delirium, resistance to pollution and the destruction of ecosystems, resistance to ourselves and our weaknesses.

SYNOPSIS

ACCELERATION is the show that celebrates the 30th anniversary of Teatro da Garagem. ACCELERATION is an anthropophysical conjecture, which explores the scenic possibility of intersecting the Christian Faith, because, uncontrolled, it runs through our veins, with Quantum Mechanics. We speak of Faith in people, as particles, which can be so many, that are all, past, present and future, and so different from each other. In this show, we bring together all these people, adults, actors, teens, children, mass of particles in acceleration. Will Faith and Quantum Mechanics be derivations of the same miracle of Reconciliation; of the fraternal bridge, of solitary solidarity? Is there a Memory that expands and contracts, beyond us, a legacy that becomes effective, in Acceleration’s power, frenzy and slowness? From Acceleration to Reconciliation, we continue to experience this anthropophysical conjecture, in which Theatrical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics meet. Will this effort, this delusion, this tacit agreement, this crucifixion, this 30 year celebration of Teatro da Garagem be worth it? Years we live by, that are ours and do not belong to us? Years that have been, and are, giving, fading and commotion? We do not know nothing, nor do we have the right to demand anything. That is accurate, that’s enough for us.

Thank you.

“How many variation may a pose have?”, we read about Poses and Variations (Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, 2018 – 2019). We think these may be words to start asking questions aboutwhat we are going to do.
How many ideas and ideals do we take from others? How many behaviours do we mimic?
In what way are our gestures constructed and composed?  Which are ours exclusively?
How many poses are still invented? Any?
I perform for so many people, so do they perform for me?
I’m the one in the picture above but the expression is not mine.
It’s his, it’s hers, it’s hers…

They say classical music is a very serious thing, very learned! But we like to play around with everything. If we met Il Maestro Vivaldi or Herr Mozart, most probably we would pull one’s beard and ruffle the other’s hair. As it seems it is impossible for them to come down to earth, the only thing we can do is play with the music from them both: sing over it, dance to it like one dances to a good rock song, clap in violins, play the triangle in the stops and add maracas and xylophones to the stern string quartet.

It’s going to be a very animated “disconcert” but made in all seriousness!

About ALBERTO VELHO NOGUEIRA:

Ecrivain/Writer. Éditeur/Editor. Alberto Velho Nogueira’s books are very rarely available in bookstores. “Homem à Janela” publishes Alberto Velho Nogueira’s works, without going through the usual selection that publishers make, which follow guidelines, economic or not, that are only justified by the fact that publishers increasingly depend and belong to markets based on the commercial exploitation of fiction. Alberto Velho Nogueira’s works do not belong to the typical literature categories, nor to the appreciation systems that markets of economic-commercial and the general and institutional critiques seek.  The critique is usually done through a demonstration of itself and its own limits. The markets that work for success are founders of mental constraints. The institutional markets work in a closed circle and for the defence of conventional values. The writings that represent an autonomous tendency for fictional literature are rare nowadays.

Solo for a sublime manipulator of everyday objects…
A manipulator of everyday objects with a meticulous character, delicate and outrageously meet and tidy, finds himself on the crossroads between object theatre, miniature circus and involuntary clowning.
A man attempts to make the perfect cup of tea. It’s a delicate and obsessively ordered process. Vu is a show without words about the small obsessions of life. Those small obsessions which can become sickly obsessions fed by excessive attention to detail, making us completely lose our minds. Vu concerns a sensitive and meticulous man and his relationship with objects – how he transforms them and how in turn they affect him.
As a demonstration of eccentric wit, dexterity and ingenuity, Vu is a small masterpiece.

“There are many theatre shows that are great moments. Vu is one of those.” – Ouest France
Vu is a real jewel. Simplicity, humor and precision are the ingredients of this perfect theatre performance.” – Le Quotidien de la Réunion
“Small wonders and everyday moments of magic are entirely what drives Vu (…). Who knew a cuppa could hold so much possibility? (…) In a festival where the act of manipulation is at its core, this piece shines (…).” – Erin Roche, EdinburghGuide ****
Vu is a lesson in observation, rewarding close attention to the subtle and significant.” – Gareth K. Vile, The List ****
“A jewel polished to the highest detail.” – Scena.ro Magazine

BIO
The company Sacékripa was founded in 2003 by five circus artists of different origins who met in 2001 when they were at LIDO, the Centre for Circus Arts in Toulouse, France. They create multidisciplinary shows integrating the skills and expertise of its artists in juggling, acrobatics and physicality into theatre productions of physical humour, charm and occasional well-meaning pathos. The company Sacékripa performs successfully on festivals and in theatres all over the world.

L.I.B.E.R.D.A.D.E. A CINE THEATRE IN NINE LETTERS
94TH THEATRE PRODUCTION BY Teatro da Garagem
directed by Carlos J. Pessoa
TEXTS by MIGUEL TORGA
24 to 28 ApRIL 2019
TEATRO TABORDA
[WED, THU AND SAT 9:00P.M. | FRI AND SUN 4:30P.M.]

From the 24th to the 28th of April Teatro da Garagem presents L.I.B.E.R.D.A.D.E. a cine theatre in nine letters, in Teatro Taborda. It is a show that celebrates freedom and has the work of Miguel Torga, one of the great names of Portuguese literature, for background.
Reflecting the earthy strength of words, the pungency of the characters and the fine warp of Torga’s stories, L.I.B.E.R.D.A.D.E. a cine theatre in nine letters shows the geographical, human and poetic landscape of Trás-os-Montes, that “Marvellous Realm” somewhere in the Northeast of Portugal, contradictory and unequal.
This show was created for the project NORTE 2020 – “Somewhere in the Northeast”, as an invitation from Teatro Municipal de Bragança and Teatro Municipal de Vila Real and in coproduction with Teatro Académico Gil Vicente.
Carlos J. Pessoa is responsible for the production and dramaturgy of the show. The actors are Afonso Viriato, Ana Palma, Lara Matos, Maria João Vicente, Tiago Bôto and Wagner Borges. The presentation of L.I.B.E.R.D.A.D.E. a cine theatre in nine letters in Teatro Taborda will also have the special participation of Teatro da Garagens’ Educational Services Theatre Clubs.
On the 24th, 25th and 27th of April the show will be presented at 9:00P.M. and on the 26th and the 28th of April at 4:30P.M. (the session on the 26th of April is meant for the school community).

The word Liberdade (Freedom) is the motto of this show about Miguel Torga. The spelling of Liberdade is the nexus of the dramaturgical proposal; each letter corresponds to the first letter of another word that we find necessary, constitutive of the semantic content of Freedom.
So, the L in the beginning can be Read or Books (Ler or Livros). Without this capacity, of reading and writing, it is hard to think of Freedom, unless we’re referring to the case of the “simple-minded”, only subject to the rules of an unidentifiable nature.
There is, by chance or luck, no Freedom without Wrath (Ira): The Grapes of Wrath, of other memories of the “exploitation of men by other men”, the torrential Wrath of Aquiles, even older, also called anger; in Indignation, as well as in Injustice, in so much of what happens before our eyes, and that we, because of our Incompetence, decide to Ignore.
B follows, in Kindness (Bondade), the “milk of human kindness”, still, mercifully, the effect of an abnegated medicine in an unequal fight against suffering.
The letter E in Stoicism (Estoicismo), resistance to the mercilessness of the elements, to the difficulties of the landscape, to its allure as well, stoic until the end, “no concessions” of solitary emperor -, I refer a link, perhaps unacceptable, between Praça de São Martinho de Anta, where lays the memory of centenary Negrilho, those “hanging woods”, and the Campidoglio, in Rome, where the copy of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius endures.
R in Distaff (Roca), in River, in common thread, in the thread that connects, in the febrile intelligence, in Douro River, immense, rebel, adorning the landscape, weaving it in an ample movement of return; return home, return to the hands of a mother; to the depressed look of a father, not to keen on familiarities, absorbed between the fire and the writing, forcing, digging the river’s spring; the restless distaff on the tepid spinning, on the sweet and calloused hands.
D follows, in Destiny, but also in Decision; impossible combat, maybe somewhere between Destiny and Decision, decision to counter destiny, the destiny of countering the decision; between strong will and the circumstances to which each of our lives sway? “It’s destiny!” or “He managed against everything and everyone!” or “It was a mix! It was luck! It was God!” or “I don’t believe in God, no! What about him? Does He believe in me?” Decision and Destiny, until the end, never understanding if what prevails is the indomitable will of a Decision “undertaken to the last of consequences”, if an invisible damage, or stupor, that tarnishes the will.
The letter A, in Love (Amor), at first sight, at first light, at first things, Spring love, love of irresistible and pounding truth. Could there be Freedom without love, without the messy truth of love?
D in Democracy, despite all, and against the more sceptical voices, prevails this stubborn idea of understanding respect for minorities, for the lonely voices, as a vital exercise that safeguards the integrity and the dignity of the human communities.
And, at last, E for Eros, the Greek god that safeguards the “passage from chaos into the cosmos”, from the gloomy disorder into the luminous disorder, from mortuary quietness into the springtime vitality; Eros, c’est la vie (Sèlavy in Marcel Duchamp’s formulation) of the festive bodies, the flowers, at last in magnanimous altar, pruned, in form, ornament and sap of an innocent world.

23, 24, 26, 29 & 30 ApRIL 2019
TEATRO TABORDA
[10:30 A.M.]

Within the scope of the presentation of the show L.I.B.E.R.D.A.D.E. a cine theatre in nine letters and with the celebrations of the 25th of April as background, the Teatro da Garagem team prompts a workshop dedicated to thinking about Freedom with the youngest as a conduit for freedom of speech and collective imagination through Theatre.
The LIBERDADE workshop is fundamentally based on the theme of the Carnation Revolution, teaching the participating children how important that decisive moment was in order to envision changes in the portuguese culture, towards freedom. A path that even now we still have to tread day after day.
The participants will be challenged to partake in a human board game, in which they will have to complete tasks and surpass countless obstacles. Teamwork, union, intelligence, persistence, courage and sensitivity will all be important elements to accomplish this challenge, just as they were for the ones who dared to carry out the Revolution of April 25, 1974.

BoCA 2019
BIENNAL OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS
DUPLOC BARULIN
BY TÂNIA CARVALHO

20 & 21 MAR 2019 | 9:00 PM
TEATRO TABORDA

Portugal | Concert | New Production
*world premiere

“duploc barulin”. Try to say it out loud. This is the title of Tânia Carvalho’s new journey for the production of a concert. It is in lowercase, creating a percussive onomatopoeic sound in oral pronunciation and evoking the enigma of its meaning, coherent with the way of being in the art – being it dance, drawing or music – that characterizes the artist. A title that is also an open door to the imagination that Tânia develops in each new production, being it in the body of a dancer, in the keys of a piano, in the drawings that her hand draws on paper, or in a chant. From Tânia Carvalho we know a work that is always of overflowing imagination of the expressive possibilities of the body in dancing, being it in her own body or in cooperation with other dancers.

Tânia decided to learn how to play the Erhu, a Chinese string musical instrument, and didn’t cut any corners. “I wanted to learn it the way you’re really supposed to, the Chinese way, so to use it in a ‘natural’ way and then be able to explore other sounds in the instrument, things that you’re not supposed to do”, she said. “I really want to fuse the three sounds together: the piano, the voice, and the erhu”. After having presented a drawing exhibition in BOCA, “Toledo”, in 2017, this time we get to know another artistic expression, Tânia in concert. There she is exploring the creative possibilities of the instrument, in a concert where for the first time she is also composing music for another performer, André Santos, who will join her in the piano. The lyrics are either her own or from Fernando Pessoa.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICE BY TEATRO DA GARAGEM

The Junior, Teen and Senior Theatre Clubs from Teatro da Garagem aim to develop a taste for theatre and the artistical practices, enabling people to discover the theatre universe and the amazing possibilities it encloses. The goal is for the children, teenagers and adults to try the many mechanisms that are a part of a theatre show.
The Clubs from Teatro da Garagem are one of the visible features of the Company’s Educational Service, that tries to bring the theatre and the community closer together. This movement is of mutual knowledge and is, for Teatro da Garagem, a deciding factor in the access to culture, which we believe is from everyone and for everyone.
As part of the celebrations of the Teatro da Garagem’s 30th year of activity, the work developed in the Theatre Clubs in 2019 will be directed by Carlos J. Pessoa, concluding with the presentation of the show Acceleration (Provisional Title)
