CARLOS J. PESSOA is a Professor in the Graduate Degree in Theatre of the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC) and he is the Pedagogical-Artistic Coordinator of the Masters in Theatre, specialisation in Theatre, at the same school. He was Director of the Theatre Department of ESTC between 2004 and 2010 and President of the same institution in 2011.

He holds the title of Specialist in Theatre – Directing, awarded by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. He holds a Postgraduate Degree and a PhD in Communication Sciences, Communication and Arts, at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, from the Nova Univeristy of Lisbon. He is cofounder and Artistic Director of Teatro da Garagem. Since 1989, he was the author and director of more than 90 shows that the company presented, having several plays published. In 1992 he received an Honourable Mention of the Prize Madalena Azeredo Perdigão for directing “The City of Faust”; in 1993 he received the Theatre Text Award by the Theatre in the Decade of the Portuguese Club of Arts and Ideas, for the show “Magnetic Café” ; in 2000 he was awarded the CyberKyoske99 – Genre Drama Prize for the play “Deserts: didactic event followed by a free poem” ; in 2003 he received a Special Mention, for the show “Circus” , by the Portuguese Association of Theatre Critics; in 2009 he was awarded the Best Portuguese Original Text of the Guia das Teatros by the text “On the Road , or the rainbow hour” ; in 2014, the text “Pretend”, of its authorship, was nominee in the category of Theatre – Best Portuguese Performed Text, for the Authors Award of the Portuguese Society of Authors; in 2016, Jorge Listopad’s text “For a Staging of Hamlet”, in the adaptation and staging of Carlos J. Pessoa, won the Authors Award in the Theatre Category – Best Portuguese Performed Text attributed by the Portuguese Society of Authors.
